'House of Darkness' Hulu Review: Stream It or Skip It?

house of darkness

But here is “House of Darkness” anyway, a talky, allegorical horror film that delivers plenty of LaBute’s typically sharp irony and observations but little raison d’être. It is sometimes insightful, just not about women, who outnumber the men three to one. Writer-director LaBute’s next stab at genre filmmaking is the gothic thriller House of Darkness, which IGN can exclusively debut the trailer for today. You can watch the trailer via the player above or the embed below. After writer-director Neil LaBute's long absence from movies, his big-screen comeback flips the dynamic of 'In the Company of Men' for horror crowds. “Legislators who are genuinely concerned about social media platforms’ practices have better options at their disposal, and we continue to urge lawmakers to lean in to those rather than undermining the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans,” Johnson said.

House of Darkness: Exclusive Trailer for the Seductive Gothic Thriller

Part cautionary tale, part post-#MeToo ghost story, this sly chamber piece uses silence and darkness to its advantage, allowing audiences’ imaginations to fill in the spaces and shadows of an atypical one-night stand. “Policymakers have legitimate concerns about Chinese-made apps and reciprocal access to China’s digital market, but they should address those issues through policies that are specific, scalable, and sound,” Castro said in an email to The Post. We rank every one of the British director's movies by Metascore, from his debut Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels to his brand new film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. But the real mystery is why a new Neil LaBute movie doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s radar. Buried among the world premieres at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, the project debuted practically in silence and darkness, suggesting that LaBute (who’s been dabbling in television since the MCC split, creating “Billy & Billie” for DirecTV and “The I-Land” for Netflix) may have lost his cultural cachet. But judging by the result, this wicked little movie suggests his voice may be uniquely suited to the broader conversation.

House of Darkness

By its generic title alone, House of Darkness seems destined to blend into the million-zillion streaming menus we scroll through mindlessly, but does it deserve such a fate? After House lawmakers passed the earlier TikTok legislation in just over a week, many senators called for slowing down deliberations in the upper chamber. Senate Commerce Committee Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), whose committee has jurisdiction over the bill, initially expressed concerns about whether the proposal could withstand legal scrutiny and called for hearings. House of Darkness is unique in staging and intent but that never propels it beyond being a curiosity. The performances are solid and the experiment is more than clear but it overstays its welcome about mid-way and never offers more than new rooms of the house to explore and one more person to talk to beyond the starting duo.

TikTok has blasted lawmakers’ efforts to potentially ban the app as an affront on free speech and disputes lawmakers’ suggestions that it is beholden to China or any government. The unorthodox maneuver could expedite the crackdown’s path through Congress, where negotiations had slowed after an earlier attempt hurtled through the House last month. With growing support in the Senate, the legislation appears more likely than ever to become law. The month ahead will bring new films from Alex Garland, Luca Guadagnino, Dev Patel, and more. To help you plan your moviegoing options, our editors have selected the most notable films releasing in April 2024, listed in alphabetical order.

The Senate plans to take the matter up Tuesday, Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement emailed to The Post. “The Senate now stands ready to take the next step,” Schumer said. John Serba is a freelance writer and film critic based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Find a list of new movie and TV releases on DVD and Blu-ray (updated weekly) as well as a calendar of upcoming releases on home video. House of Darkness is rated R and will be released theatrically by Saban Films on September 9, 2022, and on digital and On Demand on September 13.

A frequent chronicler of power games between the sexes, LaBute excels at this kind of loaded repartee, in which characters communicate their intentions via subtext. The delivery may be too stilted to take at face value, but that’s all the better for keeping audiences guessing. As the evening escalates, Hap becomes more direct in his douchebaggery, even going so far as to hit on Mina’s sister Lucy (Gia Crovatin) after she appears, equally lovely and every bit as enigmatic. House of Darkness finds writer-director Neil LaBute just as acerbic as ever, although he's made more compelling statements on sexual mores.

House lawmakers overwhelmingly advanced an earlier version of the legislation targeting TikTok last month, but tying the issue to the aid package, which has broad bipartisan support in both chambers, could expedite its passage through the Senate. House lawmakers escalated efforts to restrict video-sharing platform TikTok, renewing pressure on the Senate by advancing a bill Saturday that would force the company to be sold or face a national ban as part of a broader package sending aid to Israel and Ukraine. House of Darkness, now on Hulu, is a horror-comedy that (very) loosely adapts Dracula.

About the Movie

This clearly isn’t his first one-night stand — nor Mina’s, as a pile of men’s loafers seen over the opening and closing credits unsettlingly suggests. But is infidelity enough to justify whatever Mina and her sister(s) have in store? This is where LaBute is shrewd to leave things vague, inviting audiences to project their own reasons on the film’s inevitable reckoning — a horrific payoff that recalls LabBte’s laughable 2006 remake of “The Wicker Man,” only more intentionally funny this time around. Mina lives in an ominous American castle (Arkansas’ not-at-all-intimidating Dromborg Castle supplied the location, while nighttime exteriors and candlelit parlors give things a fittingly Gothic vibe), and though she claims the two have the place to themselves, Hap keeps catching glimpses of figures at the other end of darkened corridors. But he’s too buzzed and too horny to care, and besides, this clumsy pickup artist isn’t being entirely honest with her either. When Mina asks whether he’s married, Hap offers a cryptic “Not at the moment.” And though he doesn’t overtly pressure her for sex, there’s innuendo in practically everything he says.

The insufferableness of the BMW-driving Hap (played to wormy, beta-bro perfection by Justin Long) suggests his likely fate; the attentions of his beautiful pickup, Mina (a coolly menacing Kate Bosworth), suggest Hap should be wary of her invitation into her literal castle. The writer-director Neil LaBute takes a crack at the post-#MeToo revenge parable but offers more irony than insight. House of Darkness has all those familiar LaBute elements at play within the trappings of a seductive, gothic thriller. LaBute’s plays and films have proven controversial for their depictions of sexual politics, even as they've also been praised for their sharp dialogue and dark humor.

While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, are supportive of the bill’s inclusion in the aid package, their offices confirmed. The two lawmakers had previously led separate legislative efforts to tackle concerns over the app. Since lawmakers introduced their latest proposal targeting the app last month, the company has launched a major counteroffensive against the effort, enlisting scores of users through pop-up notifications to bombard lawmakers with calls voicing opposition to the legislation.

An argument could be made that going into this film knowing absolutely nothing ahead of time will yield the best results, but even then it's hard not to imagine growing impatient. House of Darkness isn't exactly a two-person gig, though, as one of the ways the story pushes itself along is with the introduction of Gia Crovatin (Billions, Syfy's Van Helsing) as another dweller in the manor who only serves to help Long's tipsy tomcat dig himself into a deeper hole, desire-wise. This definitely aids the back half of the film but, simultaneously, presents more of the same, adding to the dastardly repetition at work. Dracula fans may latch onto small tells and talismans here and there but the final result is still a movie that makes its point early and then doesn't offer much afterward. Would House of Darkness have been made and presented differently outside of the pandemic era or was the idea always to blend a two-person date play into something vampiric (with female empowerment overpinnings)?

Lucy responds by telling a tale of wronged women who sought vengeance on men who raped them and who continue pursuing sexual predators across the world. Hap becomes further disturbed when Lucy mentions a cave like the one he saw in his nightmare. Realizing the women intend to teach him a morality lesson, Hap becomes combative and tries to leave. Revealing themselves as vampires, Mina, Lucy and Nora unravel their supernatural powers with their fangs to destroy and devour Hap. Hap has a nightmare where he is imprisoned in a cave with a pile of shoes indicating he is another in a long line of victims. Hap adlibs a glib story about a man who has a threesome with two sisters.

The effort is likely to face significant legal hurdles, as have previous attempts by the Trump administration and states to force a sale or ban of the app. “I’m glad to see the House help push this important bill forward to force Beijing-based ByteDance to divest its ownership of TikTok,” Warner said in a statement to The Post. The move represents one of the most significant threats to the U.S. operations of the wildly popular app, which is used by roughly 170 million Americans, but whose China-based parent company ByteDance has long sparked national security fears in Washington. Get the scoop on new movies with exclusive clips, and more when you sign up for Lifetime Movies email updates. “Darkness” broadcasts its intentions early, underscored by the blood-red fonts, nostalgic score and other self-aware nods to classic horror.

Regardless, the end result is an interesting misfire that only really carries itself across the finish line by relying on our sheer desire to see this guy get demolished and for it all to be over. Oh, and Bosworth being drop-dead hypnotic as the lady, Mina, who's invited a bar-bro home to her freezing cold country castle. LaBute made a name for himself writing about masculinity and gender disparity so watching it play out in a spooky setting is refreshing. The film itself, though, isn't able to sustain under the staging and setting, so a stagnancy sets in. Hap thinks of himself as a “decent guy,” and because Long is such an inherently likable actor, some may give his character the benefit of the doubt.

But since then, a number of senators have come out in favor of the proposal and plans to tuck it into the foreign aid package. Cantwell announced Wednesday that she now supports the legislation after lawmakers agreed to give ByteDance more time to sell off TikTok. It’s pretty clear what Hap Jackson (Justin Long) is hoping will follow when he offers Mina Murray (Kate Bosworth, eerily difficult to read) a ride home from the local bar. Guys like Hap refer to nights like this as “getting lucky,” though he’s almost certain to have a different view of things once this tryst is through. The lucky one here in fact is Mina, whose motives aren’t nearly as apparent — the uncertainty of which drives the sense of creeping dread that percolates over the next hour and a half, depicted practically in real time. After meeting at a bar, Hapgood "Hap" Jackson goes back to Mina Murray’s remote, castle-like estate.

215 Entry Level Sound Design jobs in United States 8 new

sound design vacancies

“One of the first things you have to teach yourself as a sound designer is to forget about the literal,” Thom said. For example, he said, when you’re being asked by the director to come up with the sound for a gangster’s car, the most important information is not what kind of car it is. It’s who the gangster is, what kind of person he is and how he wants to be perceived. So if the car is a souped-up Ford Mustang, Thom said, you could certainly start with a recording of an actual souped-up Mustang. A good sound designer then asks what can be layered into that sound that will be credible but also convey the essence of the character — say, that he’s wild and out of control. Simply put, it’s someone who wants to tell stories through sound, Darling said.

Junior Audio Designer

Have a presence online in the spaces where your prospective clients are. For example, Flores said, if you want to work on commercials, you have to find where the directors or producers who are making commercials live on social media and build relationships with them there. For many people who pursue entertainment as a career, it takes years to get yourself to where you are making money from your creative work. For making money in the meantime, there’s always waiting tables.

Audio Engineer Intern

Darling said that most of the sound design work she’s doing now is creating preset sounds for music tech companies. Chances are, most of the sound you hear in the theater or through your TV speakers wasn’t recorded when the scenes were shot on set. Instead, it was done by audio specialists after the filming wrapped up. The music, dialogue and sound effects are typically handled by different teams, although on low-budget productions a few people may do it all. The production’s composer oversees the music, and the rest is overseen by the supervising sound editor.

Installation Technician

A common feature is a background in music, with or without formal training — Darling, for example, was an electronic musician before she became a sound designer, and Bautista was a classically trained pianist, while Lucero and Acord were in bar bands. The sound effects team includes the people who clean up, enhance or replace the sounds recorded while the cameras rolled. They record sounds in the field, pull them from effects libraries and create them from scratch, then edit them to fit the narrative (and satisfy the director). Paula Fairfield is an International and Emmy award winning sound designer for tv, film, commercials, and basically anything that makes noise. She has 10 Emmy nominations with two wins for her work on Game of Thrones, along with multiple wins and nominations for her work in both The US and Canada....

Control Room Audio Utility

Successful designers have a solid grounding in how sound is generated and shaped, the frequency ranges that different sounds occupy and other fundamentals of the science. He also pushed back on the argument that you have to master ProTools or other specific programs to make it in the industry, noting that new options are continually emerging as the technology evolves. “Today’s tools are so powerful and accessible that it’s really about the creator, not the vehicle.

But more and more people are turning to platforms like TikTok, Twitch and Patreon. It almost goes without saying that the job requires an ear for detail, an ability to peel apart the layers of a complex sound. That’s something you can develop with practice and experience, the pros say.

Increasingly, the demand for sound designers is coming from technology and video game companies, not just filmmakers. Which is not to say that you should abandon your dream of crafting medieval battle sounds for the big screen and aim instead to design the warning tone your car makes when you leave the lights on after parking. It’s just to note that the world of sound effects and sound design is evolving.

Oftentimes, people will start by handling multiple other sound jobs on smaller productions. The skills involved are different, though; editing dialogue is nothing like performing as a foley artist or mixing sound. So on productions with larger budgets, the tasks tend to be split among people who focus on each of those specialties. Still, some sound designers say that it’s good to get experience at all of these jobs. And as a practical matter, the more sound tasks you can handle, the greater your chances are of finding work.

Who becomes a sound designer?

To be truly immersive and transporting, a film or television show needs to have sound that matches its imagery and advances its story.

“Because no matter how good a film school you go to or how good a sound course you take, it’s not going to be a perfect simulation of working in the real-world movie business,” Thom said. She got leads and tips from mentoring sites such as SoundGirls.org and People of Color in Audio, and as she did more work on low-budget independent products, she built up her presence on Instagram and other social media networks. For Lucero, the allure of music wasn’t just the songs, it was the distinctive sounds of the instruments — the tone of the guitar, the snap of the snare. Increasingly, people train for a career in postproduction sound at a film school or other specialized program, as Flores did. You’ll still need to develop a body of work to show prospective employers and clients, possibly by tracking down some student filmmakers and volunteering to do sound for them. Another way to find opportunities is to scour the postings at sites such as StaffMeUp, Mandy and even Craigslist.

Outstanding Maryland Crab Houses Worth the Drive

“I can’t overemphasize how important it is to use fresh, carefully processed meat from blue crabs,” says chef Spike Gjerde of Baltimore's Woodberry Kitchen on this recipe, which is heavy on glorious hunks of crab, light on breadcrumbs. An old chicken shack is now a popular crab house for folks on the Eastern Shore. To get here, you’ll need to plan a road trip (about 2.5 hours from D.C.), but it’s a scenic detour if you’re driving to Ocean City. And the crabs pair perfectly with the restaurant’s signature fried chicken, a secret recipe since 1974. The season started on St. Patrick’s Day and spring hours expand this week (open 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and noon on weekends).

Carmichael and others in 2004 note that horseshoe crabs are known to be important predators of small invertebrates that live in the substrate of marine environments. Horseshoe crabs are living fossils that are a common sight along the U.S. They are commonly observed along beaches in the spring when they come on shore to spawn and their spawning aggregations can be very impressive with thousands of animals coming on shore during high tide events. Females will typically have one male attached in amplexus and also surrounded by several other males.

The male clasps onto the female’s shell with a modified pair of claws. The female drags him around during the spawning process. In addition to the attached male, several other males may also attempt to fertilize the female’s eggs by arranging themselves on and around the spawning couple during the egg-laying process. Horseshoe crabs are characterized by high fecundity, or ability to have a large offspring, as well as high egg and larval mortality and low adult mortality. They breed in late spring on low-energy coastal beaches along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts in the United States, laying eggs in nests buried in the sand.

Active management, as well as innovative bait conservation techniques, have successfully reduced commercial horseshoe crab landings in recent years. Horseshoe crabs are evolutionary survivors that have remained relatively unchanged in appearance for 350 million years. The horseshoe crab is not actually a true crab, but a member of an ancient group of arthropods, closely related to spiders and scorpions. There are four species of horseshoe crabs around the world and only one in North America. The species in North America is the most abundant in the world and ranges on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula. A state Department of Natural Resources report published in January 2023 found that in the 1990s, crabbers caught about 6 million blue crabs annually.

Horseshoe crab blood plays a vital role in human medicine. The straw-colored, copper-based blood turns blue when exposed to high concentrations of oxygen. Horseshoe crab blood contains primitive large blood cells called amoebocytes. A clotting agent called Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate is derived from the amoebocytes of the horseshoe crab. When the clotting agent comes in contact with bacterial toxins, a clotting reaction occurs.

Larvae hatch from eggs within two to four weeks, although some larvae may overwinter within nests and hatch out the following spring. Planktonic larvae typically settle within one to two weeks of hatching and begin molting as they grow. Juvenile crabs remain in intertidal flats, usually near breeding beaches. Older individuals move out of intertidal areas to deeper waters.

While some crabbers have welcomed new regulations as they would block many out-of-state crabbers from Palmetto State waters, there’s been much concern about giving the department the power to close parts of the fishery. The crabbers claim the department’s data collection methods are inadequate. South Carolina state Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms, asks questions during a Senate debate in January 2024. Campsen championed a bill that would have introduced regulations on the state’s blue crab fishery. A few seafood houses only operate from March to October (when Maryland’s season dies down), but many crab-picking places stay open year-round by sourcing from other waterways.

Given its members’ rhetoric about crime and public safety, it might surprise you to discover that the Republican Study Committee just released a new budget proposal for 2025 that actually cuts funding meant for localpolice departments. Habitat requirements change throughout the horseshoe crab life cycle, extending from intertidal beach fronts and tidal flats in coastal embayments for eggs and larvae, to the edge of the continental shelf for adults. Limulus has been described as an ecological generalist by K. Shuster in 2009, that is able to tolerate a wide range of environmental parameters throughout its distribution. After four Senate hearings in which Campsen went back and forth with a group of crabbers, it seemed they reached a compromise. That compromise fell apart April 17 when a group of crabbers who had not attended the Senate hearings showed up to the House hearing and took issue with the license system, which had not previously been a major point of contention. “Sometimes you just have a feeling in your gut something just is not quite right, and I’ve got a feeling that something is not quite right,” said state Rep. Cal Forrest Jr., a Monetta Republican who chaired the subcommittee hearing. The bill, championed by state Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms, underwent significant changes after four public hearings in which crabbers and the state Department of Natural Resources ultimately could not see eye to eye. Andrew Zimmern spent years studying, cooking, and eating soft-shell crabs while working with them in Maryland. Here he serves them fried with a bright, spicy, herbal dipping sauce that he inherited from the owner of the largest crab processing facility in India.

A Mouth Watering Experience

Sadly, Baltimore’s iconic crab restaurant Bo Brooks permanently closed this year. The proposal would defund the Community Oriented Policing Services program, or COPS. The program was created in the wake of the rise in crime in the 1990s. The diet of juvenile horseshoe crabs is varied, including particulate organic matter from algal and animal sources. As horseshoe crabs mature, the diet composition shifts to larger prey.

For all their leadership instability, one common refrain echoed almost daily by congressional Republicans is that we have a crime crisis in America and Democrats (and the president) are to blame. Not to let the facts get in the way of a good story, it’s worth noting that homicide rates across the country are plummeting. And yet, the rhetoric from House Republicans across the country from New York to California tells a completely different story. "These proposals are the result of years of hard work, public hearings, stakeholder surveys and multiple subcommittee meetings," department Director Robert Boyles said in a statement to the newspaper. "Science shows these changes are necessary to protect this vitally important resource."

Pharmaceutical companies test the sterility of vaccines, drugs, prosthetics and other medical devices using Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate. Campsen, whose highest priority this session has been the blue crab legislation, slammed the House lawmakers as irresponsible. Growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, DeeAnn Budney attended all-day Chesapeake blue crab feasts organized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The flavor works well for her fantastically spicy crab cakes.

Horseshoe crab populations range from the Gulf of Maine to Florida. The species range extends into the Gulf of Mexico from Florida west into Louisiana and south to the Yucatán Peninsula. The species is considered to be absent from Texas to Tabasco, México. Horseshoe crabs are fairly long lived animals, with individuals living more than 20 years.

Crab-picking here typically dies down by November or December, but the seafood house remains open year-round. The coastal cottage town of St. Michael’s is home to decades-old seafood house The Crab Claw, which offers the ultimate crab-cracking, Old Bay-blasted experience right on the inner harbor. Its steamed-and-seasoned namesake is served by the dozen or individually.

Mr. Weinstein was not charged with assaulting those women, but Justice James Burke allowed them to appear for the prosecution as Molineux witnesses, also known as “prior bad act” witnesses. Tomi-Ann Roberts, a professor of psychology at Colorado College, said the ruling infuriated her but did not shock her. She had accused Mr. Weinstein of sexually harassing her during an encounter at a hotel in 1984 that she believed was a business meeting. Fatima Goss Graves, the chief executive of the National Women’s Law Center, said at a news conference in Manhattan that today’s decision would only invigorate the #MeToo movement. “Their testimony explained the idiosyncrasies of the entertainment industry that allow assaults to be perpetrated by influential and powerful men against young and relatively powerless aspiring actresses,” Judge Singas wrote.

Harvey Weinstein’s conviction was fragile from the start.

The criminal case against Mr. Weinstein had been viewed as fragile since the day it was filed, and prosecutors were believed to have taken risky, boundary-pushing bets to see it through. Still, the ruling was met with expressions of shock and anger by some of Mr. Weinstein’s accusers. Reached by phone a few minutes after the court shared its decision, Ashley Judd, the first actress to come forward with allegations against Mr. Weinstein, was unwavering in her own judgment. The women’s testimony was searing, and when Mr. Weinstein was convicted in 2020, and then sentenced to 23 years in prison, it looked like the prosecutors had expanded the possibilities for holding sex offenders accountable.

The appeals court agreed with Weinstein that the trial judge violated his right to testify in his own defense. The trial judge had ruled that if Weinstein took the stand, prosecutors would be allowed to question him about a long history of bad behavior, including allegations that he threw food at an employee and punched his brother at a business meeting. The appeals ruling said this “impermissibly” affected Weinstein’s decision not to testify at trial.

Central to the decision to overturn the conviction of Harvey Weinstein was something called “Molineux witnesses.” That term refers to witnesses in a trial who are allowed to testify about criminal acts that the defendant has not been charged with committing. Ms. Bonjean, who represented Bill Cosby in the successful appeal of his sexual assault conviction, also said that the Los Angeles prosecutors erred by informing the jury that Mr. Weinstein had been convicted in New York, which might have unfairly swayed jurors. Ms. Judd appeared with several other sexual assault survivors and activists on Thursday at a hastily arranged news conference on the 29th floor of the Millennium Hilton in Midtown. We make sure that every detail is completed beautifully and as-designed.

Judge Singas said that the witness testimony of the additional women, who described their disgust and horror at Mr. Weinstein’s advances, had made it clearer to the jury that the former producer had to have known that he did not have the women’s consent. Sara Ziff, the executive director of the Model Alliance, called on lawmakers in Albany to pass the Fashion Workers Act, which would provide labor protections for models, before the end of the legislative session on June 6. “While today’s news is devastating, it only strengthens our commitment to reforming industries predominantly made up of young women,” she said. “The New York decision relates to the excessive use of other accusers — and the concept of uncharged accusers and bad acts is equally applicable in the L.A.

Whether your business is modern and edgy or playful and bold, choosing the right typeface and color for your "N" logo is crucial. See our collection below for logo ideas, or use our free letter logo maker to create your own. “We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes,” the judges wrote in their decision on Thursday. The decision to overturn the conviction “represents an unfortunate step backward from recent advances in our understanding of how sex crimes are perpetrated and why victims sometimes respond in seemingly counterintuitive ways,” Judge Cannataro wrote.
